Drupal Association: What’s it like to be a woman in technology?
Baddy Sonja Breidert: Looking back, being a woman in technology has been a very positive and enjoyable experience for me. It’s also nice to look back and see how things have changed. When I graduated in 2003 with my B.Sc degree in Computer Science I was one of very few female students at that time. After graduation I started to work as a developer and later as an analyst in a Venture Capital company that invested in tech companies.
When I started my studies in TU-Vienna in 2007 I became part of the University Robotic team that competed in the European Championship in Robotic soccer in 2008. I was the only woman participating in that tournament out of 200 hundred participants.
After my Master studies, I worked as a developer in Austria, but when our first son was born, we decided to start our own company using Drupal as our main technology. My experiences throughout my studies and developer work was always very positive and I always felt part of the team, often being the only woman. Looking back I have also realised that I have a passion for introducing opportunities in tech to women and I get really happy when I’m approached by women interested in the technology industry. I enjoy discussing options and opportunities for people wanting to get involved. I believe that diverse teams and good company culture plays an important role in the success of companies.
Drupal Association: Any advice to future women business leaders?
Baddy Sonja Breidert: My main advice to future women business leaders is to focus on positivity and follow their intuition in their work. Use the opportunity to become a role model in order to pave the path for the future. We need strong leaders in the constantly changing technology industry, and it’s essential that our leaders are diverse. This way, we can build a future where we can have many voices heard, and I believe that’s how you make things that do matter and make a difference.
Drupal Association: What keeps you motivated in your career in technology?
Baddy Sonja Breidert: Since I was a little girl, I have always been very interested in technology. Every morning I wake up feeling this passion of creating great digital experiences for our clients. A large part of my job is consulting our clients and understanding their needs with the aim of simplifying processes with modern web technologies. At the end of the day, when a problem has been solved and digital processes have been made better and more effective for our clients, I remember why I enjoy my job so much. I also really enjoy the business side of building up 1xINTERNET and have been involved in every part of the business since we founded the company. I guess being a role model for my kids and future women leaders in Technology is in the end very important to me. Since 2013, I’ve been part of the Drupal community and I’ve learned a lot both about open source communities as well as community organisation. Meeting people from all over the world through this community, with different experiences and backgrounds has taught me a lot and made me a different and hopefully better person in some ways. I believe in open source when it comes to running a business and believe it’s better for all stakeholders not to be locked in when doing business. What also motivates me is doing better today than yesterday. I want our employees to feel good, and I want our clients to feel comfortable and inspired by our work. Focus on the positivity and you will have great results!
Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom with us in honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, Baddy!
