Over the last two years, COVID-19 has dominated our lives, changed the way we work, and effectively closed down the conference economy. We have resorted to valiant attempts at replacing our in-person events with virtual ones. But let’s face it, without the personal interactions and face-to-face networking often conducted while drinking and eating the local fair afforded to us at conferences in our favorite cities, virtual events while we sit in our pajamas and sip on lukewarm coffee just isn’t the same.
Nothing excites me more than the possibility of jumping on a plane, landing in Portland, Oregon, and attending DrupalCon 2022! Not only will we gather to listen to the best and brightest wax poetic about the greatest open source content management system on the planet, but for the first time in over 730+ days, we can break bread with our friends, colleagues, and/or peers at the local hotspots, or in my case, the lesser-known establishments that only the locals hold near and dear to their hearts. In doing so, we will be supporting the local economy that has been ravaged over the course of the last 2+ years.
This blog series will focus on the “mom and pop” shops or otherwise known as the “little guys” – or, the lesser-known restaurants in Portland. Using less than a scientific approach, we will uncover local spots that tickle the palate of even the most finicky eaters. Our method will focus on establishments that are within a 5-mile radius of the Oregon Convention Center, rank at least a four on Yelp and/or Google, span a variety of ethnic and traditional food varieties, and are locally owned.

Established in 2015, Matt’s BBQ offers Texas-style BBQ in their fixed-location food truck. Leveraging oak wood, their meats are cooked and smoked each day for mouth-watering, melt in your mouth goodness. They offer some of Portland’s best choices in BBQ including old standards such as Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Pork Spare Ribs. Their menu goes off the traditional path by including their in-house-made Original Sausage, Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage, Pork Belly Burnt Ends, and Turkey. Sides include coleslaw, potato salad, Pinto Beans, Queso Mac and Cheese, and Chips and Queso for a can’t miss Texas-style meal all while in the Pacific Northwest. It is important to note that due to COVID, Matt’s BBQ is currently only taking online orders. Check out their website if you are interested in catering an event. As always, when it comes to the best BBQ spots in the US, get there early because once their meats are gone, you’ll have to wait until the next day to get your hands on their delectable meats.
Stay tuned to our next post where we continue our search for some of Portland’s best local food spots within a 5-mile radius of DrupalCon 2022.
